After nearly eight years reporting at my hometown newspaper, Dec. 1 will be my final day at The Florida Times-Union.
On Dec. 2, I’ll start updating this regularly with stories.
In Jacksonville, one in five children live in poverty, Black people are twice as likely to live in poverty, Black men are 11 times more likely to be killed than the rest of the population. This is a city of tremendous inequality, but it has the potential to be a greater place. To move forward, Jaxsons need to know what’s holding our city back.
I’m one of 40 journalists who have been laid off, bought out or pushed out since GateHouse (now Gannett) purchased the Times-Union three years ago. During that time, the newspaper has only replaced one position.
There’s an opportunity to fill a gap in Jacksonville with a nonprofit collective focused on investigating stories of the city’s inequities in collaboration with other media outlets.
Leaving the Times-Union to build something new
I’m looking forward to reading your work on this extremely important topic.
